David J. Langer, MD Appointed Director of Neurosurgery at Lenox Hill Hospital

David J. Langer, MD, who joined North Shore-LIJ’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute (CNI) in June 2010 as a cerebrovascular neurosurgeon and director of cerebrovascular research, has been promoted to director of neurosurgery at Lenox Hill Hospital (LHH).

“Dr. Langer is an international leader in the field of cerebrovascular surgery and research,” said Raj K. Narayan, MD, chair of neurosurgery at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center and director of North Shore-LIJ’s CNI. “As we look to expand CNI’s neurosurgery program in Manhattan, Dr. Langer is the ideal candidate to lead this important initiative. His neurosurgical skills, coupled with his compassionate demeanor with patients, as well his unique experience with cerebral bypass surgery, will significantly enhance treatment options for patients. In addition, he has the leadership qualities to further develop the neurosurgical program at Lenox Hill Hospital, making it a prime destination for patients seeking top-notch neurosurgical care in Manhattan.”

Dr. Langer earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he also completed his neurosurgical training. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Langer served as a neurovascular fellow at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan and its Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery where he remained on faculty as an attending neurosurgeon. He then served as attending neurosurgeon and director of cerebrovascular neurosurgery at Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan. Dr. Langer also was a visiting attending at Academisch Zeikenhuis Utrecht in the Netherlands, where he studied laser-assisted cerebral bypass surgery before becoming the first in the United States to use the technology. He obtained advanced training in endovascular techniques at the University of Buffalo before joining the neurosurgical faculty of the North Shore-LIJ Health System in 2010.

His clinical interests in neurosurgery include: arteriovenous malformations, aneurysms, carotid artery disease, complex and minimally invasive spine surgery, acoustic neuromas, benign brain tumor surgery, moyamoya disease, brain revascularization and medical informatics. Dr. Langer is the author of numerous papers and book chapters and is widely sought out nationally and internationally, as an expert in the field of neurosurgery. Dr. Langer is a member of the Cerebrovascular Section of the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.
