Milton Waner, MD BCh, FCS (SA), an internationally-recognized leader in pediatric facial plastic surgery and vascular malformations has joined Lenox Hill Hospital and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital (MEETH) as the Director of the Center for Vascular Birthmarks of the New York Head and Neck Institute.
Dr. Waner comes to Lenox Hill and MEETH from St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center and Beth Israel Medical Center where he served as Director of the Vascular Birthmarks Institute of New York.
A pioneer in the development of successful treatments for hemangiomas and vascular malformations, Dr. Waner has dedicated his career to the advancement of medical and surgical therapies for children and adults with these anomalies, and others including port wine stains, venous and lymphatic malformations.
He earned his MD, BCh degree at the University of Witwatersrand Medical School in Johannesburg, South Africa. After graduating, he completed his internship and general surgical training at the University of the Witwatersrand-affiliated hospitals, a residency in Otolaryngology/Department of Surgery at the University, and a research fellowship in head and neck cancer at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He was on the faculty of the Department of Surgery at the University of Sydney in Australia, and in 1988, joined the faculty in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences where, in 2001, he was promoted to professor in the Department of Otolaryngology. He also held the Benjamin and Milton Waner Endowed Chair in Pediatric Facial Plastic Surgery at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Waner has authored and co-authored more than 100 articles and numerous book chapters and textbooks concerning hemangiomas, vascular malformations of the head and neck, and related topics. A pioneer in the development of copper vapor lasers, he has remained at the forefront of both the clinical aspects and basic research in the field of lasers in medicine. Dr. Waner holds numerous US and international patents on medical devices, including infrared glasses that can visualize veins through intact skin. This instrument will soon be used to facilitate the placement of IV catheters in pediatric and trauma patients in operating rooms and emergency rooms throughout the country.
He has served as the surgical representative on the board of directors of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. He is a member of several societies including the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Waner is the recipient of numerous awards, including an Honor Award presented by the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery and the Children’s Miracle Network Achievement Award. He is an honorary member of the British Academy of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Waner is included in several lists of top physicians including, America’s Top Doctors and The Best Doctor’s in America.
