Head and Neck Institute for NS-LIJ North Shore-LIJ Health System is creating the New York Head and Neck Institute. The systemwide center, with headquarters at Lenox Hill Hospital, will care for ailments ranging from snoring to rare cancers. A North Shore-LIJ spokeswoman estimated it will cost $3 million to $5 million to create the institute, which will have treatment and research resources spanning six hospitals. It will be divided into nine centers of excellence: aesthetic plastic surgery; cranial base surgery; facial reconstruction; head and neck cancer; diseases of the ear; allergies, asthma, nasal and sinus disorders; sleep disorders; thyroid and parathyroid surgery; and voice and swallowing disorders. "The silos need to be broken down, or you get compartmentalized care," said Dr. Peter Costantino, a surgeon who will head the new enterprise. The goal, he added, is to take on world-renown head and neck centers like the Cleveland Clinic.
