When a woman gives birth at Lenox Hill Hospital this fall, the doctors and nurses who document her labor and deliver will not use pen and paper. Instead, they will use a new software program called The IPROB System, to log all the details in a computer, including the mother?s condition, the newborn?s weight, length and vital signs. Used in over 65,000 births to date elsewhere in the United States, IPROB has demonstrated a significant reduction in risk and prevention of critical clinical errors.
"Building on our reputation for combining the latest technology with highly skilled and compassionate care, we are pleased by the addition of this new technology for our Labor and Delivery unit," said Michael Y. Divon, MD, Chairman, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Lenox Hill Hospital.
The new system provides revolutionary new tools to help eliminate errors in real-time and improve the quality of care in the obstetrical environment. The system eliminates prescription errors due to illegible handwriting, alerts staff of the possibility of drug or treatment interactions and reminds doctors and nurses to address specific elements of a patient's treatment.
"Even though there is a trend towards computerized prescriptions and electronic charts in today's healthcare environment, no other system combines record keeping with an obstetrician's thinking," says Divon.
Due to its ability to capture and record all of the events surrounding labor and delivery, some experts believe that the computer software could revolutionize health care by eventually lowering skyrocketing malpractice premiums for obstetricians. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, obstetricians are sued an average of 2.5 times during their careers and are among the top three specialties with the highest insurance premiums.
