Training Opportunities

The Center for Attention and Learning provides two types of training opportunities for those interested in Pediatric Neuropsychology. We offer full-time, two-year post-doctoral fellowships and one-year externships. Both training programs provide a comprehensive educational experience, giving the trainee exposure to neuropsychological assessment, educational advocacy, and current research and trends in the field.

Unique to our training program is an opportunity to participate in a broad range of professional relationships with outside agencies serving our children. We have developed a partnership with Advocates for Children of New York, a legal advocacy organization dedicated to fighting for the educational rights of children, especially those from low-income families. We have an ongoing training seminar with Advocates for Children, which is offered to both our fellows and externs. All of our trainees are exposed to Committee on Special Education (CSE) hearings and school visits. Lenox Hill Hospital has outstanding Grand Round presentations, which all trainees are invited to attend. We encourage a culture of intellectual curiosity and collegiality.

Our second year fellows participate in a special program, The Robin Hood Assessment Program, funded by The Robin Hood Foundation, the premier New York fundraising organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty. This program provides fully funded evaluations to families referred by other Robin Hood funded programs.

Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Pediatric Neuropsychology

Lenox Hill Hospital is accepting applications for two post-doctoral fellowships in Clinical Child Neuropsychology. This is a two-year, full-time position that is based at the Center for Attention and Learning (CAL), which is part of the Child/Adolescent Section of Psychiatry, and located within the Outpatient Center for Mental Health. The Outpatient Center is staffed by psychiatrists, psychologists, nurse-practitioners and students. The mission of CAL is to provide expert neuropsychological evaluations of low-income school-aged children with learning, attention, and related disorders. CAL has recently been the recipient of a Robin Hood Foundation grant, which has allowed us to expand our reach. Also, Lenox Hill Hospital is now part of the North Shore-LIJ Healthcare system.

The two-year program will focus on neuropsychological assessment for children with Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or both. There are also opportunities to evaluate other developmental disorders. Fellows will receive extensive training in neuropsychological assessment, as well as training in advocacy to learn how to intervene within the school system and help obtain the best support for our patients. Fellows are encouraged to attend Psychiatry and Neurology Ground Rounds, and will be expected to participate in a weekly case conference. Individual supervision will be provided on a regularly scheduled basis.

The Lenox Hill Hospital Department of Psychiatry has had an active training program in Psychiatry and Psychology. Psychology training has been conducted continuously since 1980, at the start of our first externship. In addition to the students who participate in our APA-approved internship, the department has six externs. Two of the externs are part of CAL. The CAL staff includes three staff psychologists, four post-doctoral neuropsychology fellows, and a social worker. Interested applicants should send a CV, two letters of reference, a graduate transcript and a sample neuropsychological report by January 10. Confirmation of completion (or progress toward the doctorate) should be forwarded by the candidate's Program Director. Please contact Dr. Peter Pramataris at 212-434-6561 for further information.

The Externship Program in Pediatric Neuropsychology
The Center for Attention and Learning
Lenox Hill Hospital

The Center for Attention and Learning (CAL) at North Shore-LIJ Lenox Hill Hospital is offering Clinical Child Neuropsychology Externship positions annually. The mission of CAL is to provide comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations to low-income school-aged children with learning disabilities and/or ADHD. Externs are expected to work two days per week. The extern will gain experience in the following areas:

Neuropsychological evaluation of the LD or ADHD child. Opportunities to evaluate other diagnoses exist.

Consultation and advocacy assistance with families trying to navigate the special education system.

Behavioral and psychosocial approaches to addressing issues related learning disorders and ADHD.

All externs will receive individual supervision, and participate in a weekly didactic seminar designed to provide an in-depth understanding of current issues in learning disabilities and ADHD. Also, externs will have the opportunity to attend Grand Rounds at Lenox Hill Hospital. The CAL staff includes five staff psychologists, four post-doctoral neuropsychology fellows, and a social worker. We work closely with legal advocates (via formal partnerships), and child psychiatrists at the Outpatient Center for Mental Health, which is part of the Department of Psychiatry. Lenox Hill Hospital is now part of the North Shore-LIJ healthcare system.
