Consult-Liaison Service

Services may include:

• Evaluation and treatment of patients with pre-existing psychiatric disorders and medications;
• Evaluation and treatment of patients with pre-existing alcohol/drug abuse or dependence;
• Treatment of acute psychiatric symptoms secondary to medical illness;
• Support for patients and their families;
• Assistance in improving rapport between patients, medical caregivers and family members;
• Evaluation of capacity for medical decision making and discharge planning.

The Service consists of three attending psychiatrists who are board certified in Psychosomatic Medicine (Consultation-Liaison psychiatry);  New York University Department of Psychiatry PGY IV residents; Downstate Medical School MSIII medical students; and Lenox Hill Department of Psychiatry psychology interns.

Consultation requests are made by attending and house staff physicians on the Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology and Emergency Department Services.  Patients and family members may also request a psychiatric consultation from these physicians.
