Microsurgery and micro-vascular surgery are surgical techniques that use the operating microscope, micro-surgical instruments (much like jewelers instruments), and sutures as thin as your hair to repair cut nerves, or to transplant bone, skin, or muscle tissues from one part of your body to another.

While best known for emergency replantation, these state-of-the surgeries are used to reconstruct:

  • the breast (DIEP flap, perforator flap)
  • exposed fractures and orthopaedic hardware (muscle transplant)
  • facial paralysis (muscle and nerve transplants)
  • the jaw (fibular flap)
  • a missing arm or leg bone (fibula flap)
  • leg or foot wounds in patients with diabetes and peripheral vascular disease (skin or muscle flaps)
  • a missing thumb (toe to thumb transplant)vein closurescale image
