Surgical Pathology Service
Department of Pathology
12th floor Uris Building

Chief: John A. Terzakis, MD

The Surgical Pathology, a division of Anatomic Pathology, processes and makes diagnoses on over 22,000 patient specimens each year. The majority of cases are from surgeries performed at Lenox Hill Hospital and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Institute as well as specimens sent from physician offices. The section operates Monday – Friday, 5:00am – 9:00pm and Saturdays 8:00am – 1:00pm.

Under the direction of John A. Terzakis, MD, the section has a staff of seven full-time pathologists, all board certified in Anatomic Pathology. The diagnostic staff includes internationally recognized Hematopathologist, Harry L. Ioachim, MD, along with four board certified Cytopathologists and one board certified Dermatopathologist.

The pathologists work closely with our surgeons performing 1,500 Intra-operative consultations (frozen sections) to assist in diagnosis while in the operating theater.

To assist in diagnosis, the following specialty services are available on site:

  • Histochemistry
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Flow Cytometry
  • Transmission Electron Microscopy
  • Specimen Photography
  • Scanning Electron Microscopy
  • Immunofluorescence Cytology

Consultation service is available at Lenox Hill Hospital for second opinions on diagnostically challenging material.

Upon proper patient authorization, requests for copies of records may be made by calling the pathology records office at (212) 434-2350.
