Microbiology Laboratory

The Microbiology Laboratory offers a comprehensive array of diagnostic, prognostic and monitoring testing in Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology (AFB), Mycology, Parasitology and Immunoserology to assist our physicians in isolating and identifying virulent pathogens and disease causing agents. Once the agent is identified, drug susceptibility tests are performed and reported to the medical staff to assist in the selection of appropriate antibiotic therapy.

Mycobacteriology

Mycobacteriology excels in its collaborative efforts with our medical staff in treating such diseases as tuberculosis and other acid-fast bacilli infections. The repertoire of tests includes direct examination of smears using complex specialty staining procedures, cultures, and identification of pure isolates by DNA probing. The Mycology department identifies molds and yeast by a number of specialty stains on direct examination and slide cultures in additional to biochemicals. Working with the physicians at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Institute, our expertise encompasses identification of fungi associated with eye infections caused by contact lens use. The department of immunoserology plays a significant role in pre-natal testing, providing mother and child with prenatal screening test for Streptococcus group B and Maternal HIV, as well as Bacterial Antigen testing and cerebral spinal fluid and placenta cultures of mother and/or child.
