Anesthesiology

Anesthesia care is provided by about fifty Anesthesiologists who are Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. Almost all of the physicians have additional training and expertise in a subspecialty area of Anesthesiology.

Subspecialty groups within the Department include:

  • Anesthesia for Cardiac Surgery
  • Pediatric Anesthesia
  • Obstetric Anesthesia
  • Regional Anesthesia and Interventional Pain Management
  • Anesthesia for Neurosurgery
  • Anesthesia for Ambulatory Surgery.

Individual Anesthesiologists are assigned to patients by the Chairman of the Department, based upon the subspecialty requirements for the surgical procedure and the expectations of both the Surgeon and the patient. Surgeons work with a small cluster of Anesthesiologists over time so there is good team work in the Operating Rooms.

A core group of ten Anesthesiologists concentrate their practice in Eye, Ear, Throat, and Cosmetic Surgery at the 64th Street Ambulatory Surgical Center (formerly Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat Hospital). Additional Anesthesiologists rotate between the main hospital and 64th Street to care for ambulatory Orthopaedic patients and small children as determined by scheduling of elective surgery.
